10 Most Disappointing Movies From My Childhood

I love going to the movies.  I love watching movies.  I love talking over movies.  I love speculating about movies that will come out more than a year from now.  The point is even as a kid I thought seeing a movie was amazing always!  So if I came away from a movie and had any negativity towards it, that was a big deal.

This list is a run down of 10 movies I have strong memories of not liking on my first viewing.  I'm sure I'll remember more later, but for now, enjoy!

Film:
The Fox and The Hound (1981)

Did I Go Back:
Honestly re watching this trailer made me think I should re watch it.  But this movie was so depressing I swore it off right away.  They aren't even friends after the childhood scenes.  Even if one of them helps the other in the end, I don't remember because I felt I was hoodwinked by the fun loving trailers.  No I didn't give this movie a second chance.

Film:
Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Did I Go Back:
I saw this movie in theatres, I'm pretty sure by tricking my grand parents into taking me.  I assume my parents could tell this movie would stink from the trailer.  I was sold on Luigi being played by John Leguizamo with a backwards hat and those amazing looking boots.  Boy does this movie make you work for those boots and I didn't immediately recognise anything from the games unless they flat out named them.  I assumed there'd be a sequel by now, but everyone probably knew that would be a foolish endeavour.  I think I watched this again in University so that something could be on while I contemplated studying.  However, it was disappointing when I first saw it and nothing has changed since.

Film:
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)

Did I Go Back:
I saw this with Ryan while staying over at his house.  I thought, how could I lose, I love the show.  I came away from this movie thinking, there are like two punches thrown in this whole movie, and it's maaaaad boring, son!  Luckily I went back to give it a better look and realise it's a top 5 Batman movie!  It's not a kid's movie, but it's a dope movie!

Film:
My Girl 2 (1994)

Did I Go Back:
I'm going to be honest with you, I saw this movie off the strength of the first movie even though, without Thomas J, there's no need to revisit these characters.  I don't remember anything from this movie.  I just remember sitting there thinking, I don't quite get what's going on.  Probably how I felt during the first movie, but at least Macaulay was in there for me to root for.  One positive thing I will say about this movie I will never watch again, is that it clearly shows that Anna Chlumsky can deliver dialogue with the best of them, word to her role on Veep!

Film:
Richie Rich (1994)

Did I Go Back:
1994 was not without it's Culckin flick, though.  I meeeaaan...  the trailer pretty much tells you this movie would be bad.  But it looked like it might be fun in a Blank Check type of way.  And yet here is Richie Rich on a disappointment list and Blank Check is safe and sound on a "that was a pretty fun and quotable movie" list in my head.  I remember the McDonald's in his house seeming cool and everything else seeming like the end of Macaulay being a reliable star in my eyes.  No I didn't bother re watching.

Film:
The Phantom (1996)

Did I Go Back:
Is this the first time I remember thinking in the movie theatre... hey there's stuff in the trailers that I don't see in this movie?  Probably.  Not a good start for this bland movie. Everyone in my family told me how much they loved The Phantom back in the day and I liked The Shadow enough without having to re watch it so this seemed like a win-win.  Unfortunately it seems like I should have pushed for The Rocketeer 5 years earlier as the old timey super hero film to watch as I still haven't seen that.  I remember leaving that theatre and knowing there was no chance we were getting a sequel.  As such, I've never revisited this movie.

Film:
Batman & Robin (1997)

Did I Go Back:
I have definitely seen this movie more than once.  This was the second Batman movie I got to see in theatres.  Meaning it had everything going for it.  I wouldn't be distracted by playing with action figures while the movie was on... I would just be there with a drink and popcorn to enjoy this amazing movie.  It didn't go that way.  I remember desperately trying to come up with reasons why the movie wasn't bad.  But there is no denying this is a doo-doo film.

Film:
Steel (1997)

Did I Go Back:
I'm pretty sure that I was underwhelmed by this movie because of the lacklustre costume Shaq has on.  I get that you can't go comic accurate for this movie, but he doesn't look like a hero at all!  He looks like a henchman.  His lame costume made this movie more disappointing than Kazaam.  In truth, It's not just the costume it was pretty much the lacklustre approach to everything in the movie.  I don't remember if I saw it more than once, I just remember thinking... that's it???

Film:
A Bug's Life (1998)

Did I Go Back:
I didn't realise I was in the minority on this, but of the ant movies in 1998, I'm an Antz fan through and through.  I just thought there was more to it.  I thought the animation on Bug's Life was worse and it didn't have half as much Jennifer Lopez as Antz did.  Luckily I was hipped to the fact that A Bug's Life is a retelling of Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven also I needed to do a ranking of Pixar films, so I re watched it.  The outcome is that I have a lot more fondness for the movie, but I doubt I'd like it more than Antz if I re-watched both again.

Film:
Little Nicky (2000)

Did I Go Back:
I like a lot of Adam Sandler movies for someone who doesn't identify as an Adam Sandler fan.  However, this movie right here?  This was probably the first time I saw one of his movies, didn't like it and didn't think that I'd like it later if I saw it again.  They brought back Chubbs (I think) from the best Adam Sandler movie and I still hate on this movie.  There are some cool people who show up in this.  Namely Quentin Tarantino as a blind guy.  However, unlike The Wedding Singer (what was I thinking?) and The Water Boy, two movies I didn't like the first time I saw them, I never thought back fondly on scenes and decided to go back only to realise I actually liked the movie.  This was the beginning of the end for my low key Adam Sandler fandom.  Mr. Deeds was the nail in the coffin.
