10 of my Favourite Drake Hooks
Believe it or not, I dig Drake. What's more, I dig him on hooks! So let's celebrate 10 of his catchiest hooks right now!
Song:
Drake- "Best I've Ever Had" (2009)
Catchy Factor:
In addition to this being the first song by Drake that made me think, "Well I guess wheel chair Jimmy can sang!" It also sports a hook that had everyone repeating "you da you da best!' Repetition is a great way to try and achieve memorable hook status.
Song:
Birdman (ft. Drake & Lil Wayne)- "Money to Blow" (2009)
Catchy Factor:
True story, the English language has very few words ending in a vowel sound that carries. It makes for very tedious opera listening. Drake, however, has that O sound to play with when he insists that he has money to "blo-o-o-owww" making it really fun to sing along to.
Song:
Drake- "Over" (2010)
Catchy Factor:
When this song came out it was clear that not only had Aubrey moved on from acting, he was taking this music business as seriously as possibly could. Realistically its just the way the dramatic strings work with Drake's voice as he laments noticing way too many people he didn't know last year that makes this hook stand out for me.
Song:
Rick Ross (ft. Drake & Chrisette Michele)- "Aston Martin Music" (2010)
Catchy Factor:
The audacity of having two unique hooks on one song may rub some people the wrong way, but it's that very moment where the beat switches up and Drake keeps the hook marathon going on that stuck with me and made me enjoy it.
Song:
DJ Khaled (ft. Drake/Rick Ross/Lil Wayne)- "I'm on One" (2011)
Catchy Factor:
Contextually I can piece together what it would mean if I was "on one", but I must admit, the term's actual meaning alludes me. However, that doesn't stop me from using the term outside of trying to mimic that now trademark Drake hook voice.
Song:
2 Chainz (ft. Drake)- "No Lie" (2012)
Catchy Factor:
That moment when you realize you've ceased making light of a song and you're genuinely enjoying singing out "No lie, no lie, no liiiey liiiey, iii!" while riding around Toronto.
Song:
DJ Khaled (ft. Drake/Rick Ross/Lil Wayne)- "No New Friends" (2013)
Catchy Factor:
I just like the idea behind having an anthem for not trusting new people and only sticking to people you knew from like middle school on. Plus it has that whole repetition thing going for it. If you're not reciting "No no new" after listening to this song I don't know how to help you.
Song:
Drake (ft. 2 Chainz & Big Sean)- "All Me" (2013)
Catchy Factor:
Now the fun of this hook is making up new lyrics about all the things that are "all you." It's like you and Drake are sharing hook duties with you doing the heavy lifting on the creative end of things. Trust me, it'll be your new favourite thing for like the duration of the song and maybe one more time on repeat.
Song:
Big Sean (ft. Drake & Kanye West)- "Blessings" (2015)
Catchy Factor:
Remember that vowel thing from earlier? The "Waaay up" aspect of this hook immediately demanded my attention and in return warranted multiple uses in my daily life. For instance, when ever I take a bite of some particularly good food, please believe I'll be saying "Waaaay up, these wings are blessed!"
Song:
Meek Mill (ft. Drake)- "R.I.C.O." (2015)
Catchy Factor:
Sometimes less is more. The truth is, they might just get hit with the "R.I.C.O." The truth is not what is said here; in fact it's how it's said. The cadence appeals to me and yet again, I find my self just blurting it out as I putter around my house.
