10 of my Favourite Postmodern Jukebox Joints

December 11, 2015 by Daniel Grant

It's time to get your dancing shoes on.  Or at least get to a place where head nodding won't be mocked!  I dig a good remix, and it doesn't always have to be done by Puffy or Jermaine Dupri.

For instance, Scott Bradlee likes to get it in by reworking Top 40 songs I wouldn't normally listen to on a regular basis in a way that always seems cool to me.  Why not listen to 10 examples of that right now!

Rank/Song:
#10- "Shake it Off" (Motown Style)

Original Song:
I have said thatI like Taylor Swift's "Shake it Off" despite my better judgement, but if I can't hear "Shake it Off" by Mariah Carey, I guess, the Scott Bradlee version is the one I'll rock with sans shame.

Rank/Song:
#9
- "Brithday" (Doo Wop style)

Original Song:
Now on this one, Scott tricked me into thinking I'd like Katy Perry's "Birthday," but that's a no go.  Unfortunately, the original just is not my cup of tea.

Rank/Song:
#8
- "Lean On" (Stevie Wonder Style)

Original Song:
I wanted to like Major Lazer's "Lean On" but I gotta give it up to Scott for thinking of me when he said, but what if it was done in a style where you were confident about how to pronounce the singer's name?

Rank/Song:
#7
- "Just Dance" (40s Jazz Style)

Original Song:
Yes Lady Gaga sneaked in a song that I like in the form of "Just Dance" but much like Taylor, I feel a lot more confident playing this S. Bradlee remix in public

Rank/Song:
#6
- "Die Young" (Country Style)

Original Song:
I don't think I've ever listened to Ke$ha's original "Die Young" in full.  I couldn't even bother to let it play out while I was writing this.  I don't even know what it is about this Bradlee version.  Must be the instrumentation.

Rank/Song:
#5
- "Mad World" (Vaudeville Style)

Original Song:
I'm not going to act like I knew this was originally done by Tears for Fears, because I thought it was Gary Jules when I heard "Mad World" in the Gears of War trailer.

Rank/Song:
#4
- "Sweater Weather" (Edith Piaf Style)

Original Song:
The Neighbourhood goes hard, and I wrote a review about their Made In America appearance to prove it!  Their "Sweater Weather" just sounds a little better and sadder with French in it.

Rank/Song:
#3
- "I'm Not The Only One" (New Orleans Style)

Original Song:
I love when I can't tell the song is supposed to be sad, and having Sam Smith's "I'm Not The Only One" done the way the Big Easy would do it, just works!

Rank/Song:
#2
- "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" (BioShock Infinite Style)

Original Song:
Look if it's good enough for Dipset to sample, then you know it's going to be alright by me.  But, I have a much easier time taking Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna have Fun" when it's run through the BioShock filter.

Rank/Song:
#1
- "Fancy" (Flapper Style)

Original Song:
How do you make Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" fancier?  Make it seem like it would have been played in Chalky White's club during Board Walk Empire.
